The frequently asked questions (FAQs) are listed below, together with resources we’ve made available to you for free.

The first set of questions are about Expertship itself.

The second set of questions are about how to get started – either on your own, or with Expertunity (we are proudly the world leaders in this type of professional development).

Please note our mission is to help technical experts everywhere – whether in IT, risk, finance, engineering, health, science, HR, law, of any other specialist knowledge domain – to be the best experts they can possibly be, and we acknowledge that sometimes client organizations want to do their own thing. We are happy to share.

ABOUT EXPERTSHIP

Do the experts in my organization really need Expertship?

There are resources on this website that answer this question. What is Expertship? An introduction is a regularly referenced page.

Why do experts get benefit from Expertship-specific programs?

You can explore the answer to this question in experts’ own words What experts love about Expertship. We have worked with nearly 2000 experts on our programs, and their feedback is consistently positive.

What is special about the content of Expertship programs? How does it differ from leadership programs?

In our Expertship programs, we focus on building the capability of experts across nine capabilities, that are defined in The Expertship Model.

The Expertship Model is a capability framework, similar in design to most leadership capability models that most large organizations use. It explains the key behaviors for experts that contribute to their professional and career success. Most importantly, it helps them understand the different levels of Expertship – specialist, expert, and master expert, and how to grow from one level to the next. The Expertship Model is a key foundation stone for all Expertship programs and initiatives. Our specialized 360-degree survey The Expertship360 is based on this model.

In this model we make the important distinction between technical skills and enterprise skills. Most experts have excellent technical skills, it’s their “ticket to the game”. They have generally over invested in building their technical skills. This has left little time to build their enterprise skills. Check out this briefing What are enterprise skills, and why are they important for technical experts?. This article also explains why enterprise skills are so important for technical experts to develop, even if they don’t realize this often by themselves.

GETTING STARTED

Can we test if Expertship Programs will work for us?

Yes. You can do this by starting small, with a low cost, low risk pilot. We offer a pilot program for as little as 4 participants, however, many of our clients start with 8 or 12 participants. Why? It enables them to better test the concept on a variety of technical experts from different knowledge domains within their organization. This is a very rich learning experience for the experts. Corporate lawyers and IT coders, for example, don’t think their expertise or in-role challenges have much in common, but in these programs they have the insight that they have very much in common.

Getting different expert groups to work together is a challenge in most sizable organizations – this type of pilot helps break down those silos.
